Leon Balogun joins Wigan on a permanent short-term deal

The English Championship side has announced that the Nigerian would ply his trade with the club until the end of the current campaign.

Following a tough spell with Premiership side Brighton & Holve Albion – with only a single appearance for the Seagulls in all competitions this season, Balogun joined Wigan in the winter transfer window on a six-month loan deal.

The move to Wigan has now been made permanent, but on a short term which would see the Super-Eagles defender finish the ongoing campaign with the Latics.

Wigan, who also confirmed contract extension to six other players, said in a statement, “We can also confirm defender Leon Balogun has completed a short-term permanent transfer to Wigan Athletic, until the end of the 2019/20 season.”

Reacting to Balogun’s permanent departure, Brighton’s coach Graham Potter said on the club’s official website, “Leon has always been extremely professional and good to work with during my time at the club, but he was finding it hard to get the game time he would have liked.

“So the loan move to Wigan seemed to be a good move for everyone involved, and he has made a really positive impact there.

“We would like to thank him for his contribution over the last couple of years and we wish him all the best for the next chapter of his career.”

Leon Balogun, a 32-capped Nigeria international, joined Brighton in the summer of 2018 and racked up a total 12 appearances for the club.
