Not Messi or Hazard, Victor Moses my toughest opponent – Luke Shaw

Victor Moses

‘I’m not joking – Victor Moses was the toughest I ever faced – albeit I was young when i squared up against him’ – Luke Shaw.

The Manchester United left-back has described the former Chelsea player and ex-Nigeria international the toughest player he ever faced.

Shaw hasn’t been short of plethora of quality opponents since he made his professional debut nine years ago, as he had encountered the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, amongst others.

However, the 24-year-old played down his meetings with these top names, describing his meeting with Moses when he was breaking into the first team at Southampton as the toughest of his career so far.

“People always think I’m joking, but one of my hardest games ever was against Victor Moses when I was coming in as a 17-year-old at Southampton,” Shaw told Man U’s official website.

“Maybe because I was so young. He was really quick, direct, strong and that was a challenge for me.

“I’ve played against the likes of Gareth Bale, Messi and Hazard, and they were all so good, but I always remember Victor Moses as a really tough opponent as well.”

Moses currently on loan at Inter Milan, was one of Chelsea’s standout performers under Antonio Conte during their 2016-17 title-winning season.

The 29-year-old, who abruptly retired from the Nigeria national team after the 2018 FIFA World Cup has been predicted to stage a comeback to the international foes for the 2022 World Cup by Segun Odegbami.

Moses in 37 appearances for the Super Eagles, scored 12 goals, and he was also part of the 2013 team that won Nigeria’s third African Cup of Nation championship.
