  • Vincent Enyeama: reason I turned down Arsenal, as he revealed he turned down North London club duo of Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs
  • Said he was also close to joining Portuguese side Porto some years back.

The Super Eagles joint-most capped player has revealed that he turned down the chance of joining Arsenal in 2006 and later in 2014.

The former Lille shot-stopper in an Instagram live chat {closely monitored by spotkick} with veteran sports journalist Colin Udoh said he rejected Arsenal because he was offered the second choice role on the two occasions he was approached.

According to Enyeama, he would rather play with the smallest of clubs than to play as second choice in the big clubs.

On clubs, he almost joined, the ex-Nigeria international said: “Getafe, Espanyol, Porto, and so on. And I turned down Tottenham and Arsenal twice because they wanted me as the second choice.

“I turned down Arsenal twice: first was after the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, and the second time was after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It’s after I was not interested they took David Ospina.”

The 37-year-old, backing his choice, explained further, “If it’s even the smallest clubs, I prefer playing.”

Enyeama, a former goalkeeper for Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Tel Aviv Maccabi Tel Aviv, and Enyimba, since his seven-year association with Lille was ended in 2018 has been out of club.

However, the 101 capped international has vowed to continue searching for a new club – and in September of last year, he also revealed that he’d honour a return to the national team.
