Gabriel Martinelli says Ronaldo Delima is his idol.

Gabriel Martinelli has picked his countryman and a Brazilian legend as his idol, saying “I would always dream of being Ronaldo.”

Signed from Brazilian Serie D side Ituano in the summer, Martinelli at a tender age is becoming an integral member of the Arsenal team.

Martinelli’s sensational solo strike at Chelsea on Tuesday night was his 10th goal of the season – becoming the first teenager to hit that mark for Arsenal since Nicolas Anelka in the 1998-99 season.

Asides his goals, the 18-year-old has also assisted with 3 assists, and his overall contribution is drawing him praises as Arsenal’s vice-captain Hector Bellerin highlighted that the youngster professional attitude was the driving force behind his sterling form.

Martinelli, narrating his career so far said Ronaldo De Lima, a three-time world player of the year winner was his inspiration.

“I would always dream of being Ronaldo – I loved him,” Martinelli told on Arsenal’s official website.

“His nickname says it all: The Phenomenon. He was my biggest idol when I was growing up, well, him and my dad. My dad always told me he was an amazing footballer too. But when I saw him playing, I wasn’t too sure about that! That’s OK, though, because he’s still my inspiration anyway.”

Before being snapped up by Arsenal, Martinelli had four separate trials between 2015 and 2017 with Manchester United, even lining up alongside Mason Greenwood in an Under-18s friendly against Lincoln City.

Also, he had spells training with Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, but neither did the Catalunya decided to push for a permanent deal for the Brazilian.
