Madrid’s Odriozola joins Bayern Munich

Odriozola signs for Bayern

Alvaro Odriozola joins Bayern Munich till the season ends.

The Spanish right-back joined the Los Blancos in the summer of 2018, but lack of game time at the Spain capital facilitated a move to Germany.

Bayern Munich have secured a 6-month loan signing for Real Madrid’s Alvaro Odriozola.

The signing, as described by the Bavarian Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was geared to strengthen the club’s defence line as instructed by the coach.

“Following internal discussions, we agreed to follow the wishes of head coach Hansi Flick in strengthening the defence and decided to go for Álvaro Odriozola,” The Chairman said in a statement released on the club’s official website.

“We are delighted about the signing and thank Real Madrid for the friendly and cooperative talks.”

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić, on his part, said: “We are convinced Alvaro Odriozola will help our team with his qualities. I am very happy we’ve found a full-back like him.”

Odriozola, a £40m signing has found himself behind the pecking order at Real Madrid, as fellow Spaniard, Dani Carvajal is the first choice right-back.

While the 24-year-old former Sociedad player pulled decent numbers in his first season at Madrid – 22 games, one goal, and nine assists, his numbers dropped drastically in the first half of the 2019-20 season – with just five games, zero goals, and one assist.

With the European championship in the summer, regular playing time would afford Odriozola, a member of Spain’s squad to the 2018 World Cup, a consideration in Luiz Enrique’s team to Euro 2020.

Although Odriozola has a contract until 2024 with Madrid, his future at the Bernabeu looks very much uncertain, as the expected return of Achraf Hakimi after a successful two-year loan spell at Borussia Dortmund is expected to push him down the pecking order
