I accept being a lucky coach – Zidane

I’ve been lucky all my life, Zidane response to being seen as a “lucky manager.”

Zinedine Zidane won nine major titles – which include three straight UEFA Champions League trophies, in his first managerial reign at Real Madrid.

He stepped down at the end of the 2017-18 season, but he made a shocking return to the dugout after just ten months, as Real Madrid endured tough spells under Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari.

The win was the 47-year-old’s nine straight final wins, as he has never lost any final game as a manager.

However, many are attributing his numerous not to his tactical acumen, but luck – and when asked at a presser that precedes Madrid’s game against Sevilla tomorrow, the Frenchman said he had no problem with such position.

“If you’re asking me that, it’s because you believe I am a lucky coach, Zidane said.

“I accept that because I have been very lucky in life in general. I can only be thankful for that and keep on working hard. If you think that’s all I have, that’s no problem.”

On winning the Supercup, he added, “It’s an important trophy and it wasn’t easy but we managed to win, and it’ll stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.”

Also, Zidane reacted to Barcelona’s sacking of Ernesto Valverde on Sunday – saying coaches did expect the sack at Barcelona and Real Madrid.

On Valverde, he stated, “I’m not going to get into whether or not I understand it,” Zidane said. “I’m sorry for him. He’s a coach who has shown how good he is, and I have a lot of respect for him.

“As coaches at clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona, we know where we’re at and that isn’t going to change. If I lose a couple of games I’m going to get heavily criticised, as I did a month a half ago. You can only try to give 100%. I’m sorry for Valverde.”
