Agbonlahor: Ndidi an upgrade on Torreira

Ndidi an upgrade on Torreira, Agbonlahor
  • Gabriel Agbonlahor urges Arsenal to sign the Leicester City midfield.
  • The former Aston Villa frontman sees Ndidi as an upgrade on Torreira, who currently holds the midfield for the north London club.

Wilfred Ndidi, currently out injured has been tipped to be a perfect defensive midfield signing for Arsenal, according to Agbonlahor.

The Super Eagles midfielder, whose contract runs till the summer of 2024 has been tipped for a bigger move.

Agbonlahor, who represented England at international level, but by his ancestry, was eligible for Nigeria and England says Arsenal should be looking toward the direction of the Nigerian, as he doesn’t consider Lucas Torreira, the club’s defensive midfielder good enough.

“I still don’t think he’s {Torreira} the player who is going to take Arsenal to that next step.” the Aston Villa all-time scorer, as quoted by the hardtackle.  “I think even Arteta will look at him and think ‘he can do a job now’ but maybe when the summer comes he might be looking for someone with more legs, someone better.

“I think he is [good] for now but it’s because probably Arteta can’t go out and buy players in January, he might have to wait until the summer. So for the players he’s got available in that squad, I think Torreira’s the best option he’s got at the moment.”

On if Arsenal should go for Ndid, Agbonlahor responded, “Yeah, I think the way he’s been playing for Leicester, he’s got the legs in midfield, he can play the ball forward as well, he can win the ball back.”

Ndidi’s club currently sits third in the league and are in the running for a champions league football next season, as compared to Arsenal, who are languishing in 10th.

But Agbonlahor while admitting Arsenal signing Ndidi this winter transfer might be out of reach, he believes the club’s history is good enough to tempt Ndidi in jumping the ship to north London.

He added, “I think with the history Arsenal have got, they’re still a massive club.”

Ndidi, a 35-capped Nigerian international has featured 23 times in all competition this season for 2015 English Premier League winner and has 2 goals to his name.

The 23-year-old has been branded Nigeria’s most consistent player by former international Celestine Babayaro.

According to Babayaro, Ndidi should be in line to take on the team’s captain armband, as he couldn’t see anyone in the Super Eagles, who’s more consistent.
