No Okocha & Kanu, Eagles no longer have superstars – Rohr

Gernot Rohr: Eagles no longer have superstars, AFCON qualifiers injury update
  • The Franco-German coach says the Super Eagles have less big names unlike in the past
  • Says the present team relies on team spirit
  • Hopes Nigeria can get back to the days of Jay-Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu

Gernot Rohr believes Nigeria no longer have the calibre of big players the country used to possess in the past.

The Franco-German, who took over the Super Eagles job has guided the African side to a World Cup Mundial and a third-place finish at the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

The coach, who has started his quest to take Nigeria to a third championship final since he took over, stated he relied on team spirits rather than big names with the current set of players at his disposal.

Rohr said in an interview with Brila FM: “When you see our players, which one of them is playing in a big team? We don’t have anymore compared to the big players we had before.

“Where are the Okochas Kanus and the (Vincent) Enyeamas? we don’t have.

“We have young players, have a good team with good spirit but we don’t have the stars which we had before.”

Whilst the former Gabon and Burkina Faso coach hoped Nigeria could go back to the past, he said he would be banking on the strength of his young side.

He added, “I hope we can go back to that time because now we have young players with future. But our strength is the team and I hope with our strength we can go far.

Meanwhile, Nigeria will be ending 2019 as the 31st ranked football country in the world and 3rd in Africa behind the Teranga Lions of Senegal and Tunisia.

According to the FIFA ranking released in the early hours of Thursday, the three-time African champions would maintain the same spot as with their November ranking.
