Garba Lawal: Brazil still angry over ’96 Olympic defeat

Garba lawal Nigeria vs Brazil friendly

‘They are still hurt and it’ll be an exciting friendly,’ Garba Lawal on Nigeria vs Brazil friendly

Brazil will lock horns with Nigeria in a friendly match next month, and Garba Lawal believes the Selecao are still angry over their 1996 Olympics defeat to Nigeria.

The two nations were in the same group at the 1996 Olympics, and the South American side ran out victorious, but again met in the semis, when at the stage, Nigeria came from 3-1 down to win the game by 4-3.

Nigeria became the first African side to win an Olympic football gold medal as the country defeated Brazil arch rival Argentina in the final.

Since that lost over 23 years ago, Brazil and Nigeria met once at the senior level, in a friendly game in Abuja, and the Selecao won 3-0.

Lawal was part of the Super Eagles team that lost to Brazil in 2003 – he believes ‘angry Brazil’ will not take any chance when they face Nigeria next month.

“I believe they are angry at the 96′ Olympic defeat, that’s why they came down here to defeat us 3-0 in 2003,” the 57 capped international told Brila.net

“Anytime they want to play us, they come with a full squad because they don’t want to take chances like they did in the Olympics.”

“I think Brazil are one of the best in the world, they’ve got great players and play great football and they also know we are not a small country

The Super Eagles last friendly game was a 2-2 draw against Ukraine last Tuesday – a game that has earned the Gernot Rohr’s led side many praises from many Nigerians.

Lawal also, took many positives from the game, describing the Nigerian attack “amazing.”

“I like the way we played in the final third, on the break during the counter-attack, our strikers have been amazing.

“A lot of our players are playing well week in, week out. It makes the job easier for the coach to pick his players,” he added.
