We are not closed to signing Pepe – Unai Emery

Nicolas Pepe

Nothing on Pepe is official yet, Emery says.

Whilst admitting that Nicolas Pepe is an Arsenal target, the Arsenal coach played down talks of the Lille winger arriving at Arsenal as being imminent.

Arsenal are believed to be closed to signing Pepe for a club-record fee of £72m – payment expected to be spread across five years.

Reports in England on Tuesday had it that all agreements were sealed and medical was ongoing as at Tuesday evening, but fielding questions from journalists after Arsenal’s penalty win against Angers yesterday, Emery confirmed that no deal was official yet.

“We are working on the possibilities to sign players,” Emery said. “We signed Ceballos, and we have a possibility with Pepe.

“He (Pepe) played here in Angers a few years ago, and then in Lille. He has progressed as a player. We are speaking about a lot of players, we want to select on players who can really help us, give us big performances and improve our squad.

“We have different options. This one at the moment is not closed, but he is one we are following. No deal is official now, and I will only speak in the next hours or days if it can be official for us.

Arsenal have already secured the signing of teenage striker Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid, and William Saliba, who was loaned back to Saint Etienne.

However, deals for another left-back and a new centre-back is said to be on the deck at the Emirate.

Emery added that the target for Arsenal before the window closes was to look for players capable of improving the squad.

“We are looking for the possibility to improve, but only if we can take more steps in the squad. Our target is to sign another player if he can really, really improve us.

“Our target is continuing to sign another player if we can,” the former PSG and Sevilla coach added.
