Barcelona to appoint the former Everton manager should Valverde step down.

Roberto Martinez has emerged as a shock frontrunner should Ernesto Valverde decides to step down from his position at Barcelona.

Valverde has come under heavy criticism following Barcelona’s ignominious Champions League exit to Liverpool – and with the Copa Del Rey final lost to Valencia on Saturday night, more doubt has been casted on the former Atletico Bilbao’s future at the Catalunya club.

Although, Valverde has the backings of President Josep Maria Bartomeu and some other big wigs in the dressing room, according to Marca, the coach might decide to resign.

Marca reports that Barcelona have, however, identified Martinez, who is the coach of the Belgian national team, as their prime target to fill in the void.

Roberto Martinez, who guided Belgium to third place, at the 2018 World Cup – the country’s best-ever finish at the Mundial, in 2012-13 season led Wigan to their first ever FA Cup victory, where they defeated Manchester City by 1-0.

Meanwhile, other possibilities Barcelona are weighing are Netherland coach Ronald Koeman and Ajax manager, Erik Ten Haag.
