Mane more important than Salah – Carragher

Mane the genesis of Liverpool’s success, says Carragher

The Liverpool great said he would rather lose the Egyptian over the Senegalese in the club’s run in for a league title.

Sadio Mane is the genesis of Liverpool’s recent success, according to Jamie Carragher.

The former Southampton player has netted 18 league goals this season, just one behind the duo of Sergio Aguero and Mohammed Salah, who are both on 19 goals

Carragher discussing the importance of Mane’s form in Liverpool’s charge to win a first league title in over two decades was put on the spot on Skysports Monday Night Football by Gary Neville to choose who to be without for the rest of The Run In – Mane or Salah.

Carragher replied: “Salah. They’ve got the same amount of goals and I’m a massive fan of Mane.

“People talk about Jurgen Klopp and the signing of Salah, which has been unbelievable, and Van Dijk but Mane was the one that got Liverpool back up there.

“He was Klopp’s first big signing and he was the one that got Liverpool back into the top four, the next season was the Champions League final and this season is challenging for the title. He is the one that has been there from the very start.”

The former England international said further that with Mane, Liverpool would have won the league in 2009.

“If Liverpool or City win the league, it is going to be down to the wide players

“When we challenged Manchester United in 2009, we didn’t have that wide player.

“I’m not just talking about these teams, go back through history of the teams who win a title, the wide players stand out massively,” he added.
