Leon Balogun is Nigeria’s best defender, Taribo West

‘Leon Balogun adds something extra to the national team,’ Taribo

The ex-Super Eagles defence marshal has backed Gernot Rohr choice of selecting the defender, despite lack of playing time at his club.

Leon Balogun joined Brighton and Holve Albion on a two-year from Bundesliga side Mainz in the summer, but has found himself behind the pecking order of Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk.

The centre-back pairing of Dunk and Duffy, however, has reduced the 30-year-old to only 10 appearances all season – the last of which was in the 3-1 FA Cup win over West Bromwich Albion on February 2nd.

Several times, Rohr had said that only players featuring regularly for their clubs would be called up to the national team – a stance that saw Iheanacho being omitted from the team recently – but Taribo backs the Franco-German coach on his double standard stance in the case of Leon Balogun.

” I really think he is the best defender we have at the moment because he adds something extra when he plays,” The former Inter and AC Milan player told

“Even the game against Egypt he was way impressive and didn’t play like someone who has not played football in over a month.”

Whilst Taribo maintained that Balogun was Nigeria’s best defender going to the AFCON, he said the former Mainz defender’s spot in the team could be under threat if his club’s situation remains the same.

He added: “Rohr can’t drop him now. But after the Africa Cup of Nations if his club form stays same then the coach will have to make a decision for the good and future of the team.

“For now he is the best we have”.
