There is danger for players like Iheanacho, Rohr warns

Kelechi Iheanacho

Rohr explains Mikel, Iheanacho omission from upcoming games

The 22-year-old former Nigeria youth international has struggled for regular playing time this season and was recently omitted from the Super Eagles squad that will face the duo of Seychelles and Egypt.

Kelechi Iheanacho needs to take advantage of the international break, thus, danger on his international future looms, according to Gernot Rohr.

Iheanacho has only managed 28 games under his berth all season, scoring just two games.

While Rohr revealed that the squad for the 2019 AFCON was far from being announced, he said players like Iheanacho must step up their games.

“Kelechi needs to play with his club,” the Franco-German, as quoted by completesports.

“He also needs to take advantage of the international break to show his qualities to his new coach. I give him time but there is danger for those who do not play regularly in their club.

“The final list for the AFCON far from being made for anyone.”

Also, amongst the big names that were omitted for the upcoming matches was Captain John Mikel-Obi, who has not featured for the team since the group stage elimination at the 2018 World Cup.

Mikel, who recently moved to English Championship side Middlesbrough has rejuvenated his career with his new side, and Rohr gave explanations on the non-inclusion of his skipper for the upcoming games.

“He {Mikel} has arrived in Middlesbrough recently. He told me he was not ready and needs to work after his knee injury in China.

“He did not play all winter either. He was not ruled out for the AFCON but could not make that match in Asaba. We will see for the future, Rohr added.
