Brighton sign Leon Balogun on free transfer

Brighton & Holve Albion have completed the signing of Nigerian international Leon Balogun on a free transfer.

Balogun is out of contract with Mainz at the end of the summer and has signed a two-year- deal the Seaguls.

Confirming the signature of the 29-year-old, Albion manager Chris Hughton told the club official website, “I am delighted to welcome Leon to the club. He will add more depth to our defensive options, and I am pleased to get our first piece of business done so early in the summer.

“He is in the peak years of his career and I am sure he will integrate well into the squad. He also has valuable experience, having playing in the Bundesliga, The Europa League and at the international level.”

In a video shared on Brighton’s official Twitter handle, Balogun said, “I Brighton fans, Leon Balogun here, looking forward to meet you after the World Cup. See you then.”

Leon Balogun has represented the likes of Turkiyempsor, Hannover 96, SV Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf, Darmstadt and Mainz – all in Germany.

The former Mainz defender has won 16 international caps and his on the verge of representing Nigeria at the World Cup next month.
