Inconsistent Gombe United finally drowned in the relegation water that they've been gathering and other happenings - NPFL Matchday 37 review

As the rain dizzled down on the Yakubu Gowon turf, Gombe United players stood looking drenched, sad, spent and rejected and yes! They've just been rejected by the elites of NPFL and banished to the less reputable NNL where they had crawled up from just this January. They are back to playing zoned football with obscure teams like Zamfara United and Sokoto United after enjoying weekends traveling to Sani Abacha Stadium, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and other historic grounds. Within just 8 months their excursion is over and the NPFL has proved too waterlogged for the 'Savannah Scorpions' survival.

They've always seen this coming and they've always done nothing to stop the imminent. Oh, they did do something about it. Flushing out 8 players and replacing them with 11 new ones during the cause of a season and they did get  the taylored results that disruptive massive transfer amidst a season can bring; steak of inconsistence. They are very  consistent in their inconsistence that they've never sown together 2 wins consecutively. Every of their meager 10 wins was immediately followed by a winless streak or came off one.

During on of those poor winless run that spanned 5 games towards the end of the league's first stanza, Angry fan -tired and looking for scapegoat- mobbed and maimed first choice goalkeeper Emmanuel Fabiyi for "selling the match" to Rangers Intl. and the club was fined heavily by the LMC which further propound their already overwhelming misery.

As if axing players hasn't done enough harm, the entire board of directors was swept clean and yet performances failed to improve. Not even a 3-match ultimatum given to Manu Garba could pressure him to push the boys to loot beyond paltry 3 away points that they've gathered all season.

"It is possible and we can turn things around." said Maurice Chigozie before the Matchday 37 fixture and one must admire the optimism of the defender or maybe he was saying this with his tongue in cheek.

Their opponents Rivers United are experts in mauling teams into relegation - delivered the sucker punch to Remo Stars on Matchday 34- and they didn't hold back this time either. Coming off an inspiring 1-1 against table-toppers Plateau United at the Ryang Pam stadium, they were bouncy as expected.

Bernard Ovoke scored two controversial penalties and Bolaji Sakin belted a late piledriver that shook the frames of the post proved too much for Gombe United to "turn around".

And along with the gushing rain water running down the stadium drainage were the Savannah Scorpions being rushed back to the NNL.

Other happenings

•An astonishing 13 penalties were awarded on the penultimate Matchday, 10 were converted. Suddenly the referees forgot football is a contact sport.

•Plateau United and MFM FC have confirmed their CAF champions league position, the latter will be bringing Continental football to Lagos after 13 years.

•Enyimba were robbed 3 vital away point when referee inexplicably mistook white jersey for blue despite the game being on TV.  He awarded Rangers a late penalty and it was converted.

•Anthony Okputu scored again to go tie with FC Zurich bound Steven Odey in the race for the Rashidi Yekini Golden boot prize.
