Man U target De Ligt should join Man City or Barca
Louis Van Gaal has advised Matthijs de Ligt to join Man City or Barca if he is to leave Ajax this summer
The Ajax captain, who at age 19, captained his side to the Champions League semi-final and also to winning the Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup has been mooted for a move away from the Dutch club.
Matthijs de Ligt has recently revealed that a decision on his future would be made soon – indicating there’re possibilities of him staying put at Ajax.
English side Manchester United, were reported last week to have struck a deal to sign the defender, but according to Louis Van Gaal, the defender should either join United’s rival Manchester City or Barcelona.
The former United manager, who agreeing with former Ajax manager Peter Bosz assessment that Man City would be the ideal destination for De Ligt, suggested the Nou Camp as an alternative.
Van Gaal told Foxsports: “I think exactly the same. Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too because their central defenders are not too good either.
“He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also, and in that case I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi.”
Meanwhile, Van Gaal has questioned the rationale behind the move of De Ligt’s teammate Frenkie De Jong to Barcelona.
The retired coach believes the youngster never set the priority of regular playing time right for himself, as De Jong might find it hard to hold down a regular playing time, as Barcelona have good covers in the middle of the park.
