Rohr names Mikel, Musa, 23 others for AFCON
Gernot Rohr releases a 25-man provisional list and another six-man standby list for AFCON
John Mikel Obi, who last featured for Nigeria at their World Cup group stage exit has been included in the country’s 25-man provisional list for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mikel, who is the captain of the three-time African champions has been on self-imposed exile since the last game the team played at the 2018 World Cup against Argentina in Russia.
Spotkick, earlier today, confirmed the availability of the 32-year-old midfielder for the AFCON – as a meeting with Gernot Rohr to stage a return to the team went well – and heading the provisional list that was obtained on the official handle of the Nigeria Football Federation, late Tuesday evening was Mikel.
Vice-captain Ahmed Musa, Villarreal winger, Samuel Chukwueze, who has been a subject of a battle between the coaches of the u-20 set up and the senior national team, struggling Leicester City striker, Kelechi Iheanach were also included.
Whilst having a 6-man standby list, two players are expected to be dropped from the provisional list.

Midfielders: John Mikel-Obi, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, John Ogu
Attackers: Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Odion Ighalo, Paul Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze, Samuel Kalu, Henry Onyekuru, Victor Osimhen, and Moses Simon.
Standby: Theophilus Afelokhai, Mikel Agu, Bryan Idowu, Valentine Orzonwafor, and Ikouwem Utin
The AFCON, billed for Egypt and set to start June 23, Nigeria have been drawn alongside Madagascar, Burundi, and Guinea.
