Amuneke: “We are there (at the AFCON) to face any team that comes our way.”

With the draw for the 2019 African Cup of Nations billed to hold this Friday, the former Super Eagles winger and now, coach of the Tanzania national team has boasted that his side was unperturbed on the possibility of facing the continent’s big boys.

Emmanuel Amuneke, after 39 years wait, helped qualified Tanzania to her first AFCON – and the country’s second in the history of the competition.

The Taifa stars, who emerged second in the Group L qualifying series behind Uganda will be going into the competition has one of the underdogs.

Amuneke, meanwhile, quashed talks of his team going into the competition as an underdog and also spoke of his team’s readiness to face any side in the competition.

“We are there (at the AFCON) to face any team that comes our way,” the former Barcelona winger told naijafootballplus.

“Whether it’s Nigeria, whether it’s Egypt. It doesn’t matter. What matters is {that} we have qualified.

“Whichever team comes our way, we’ll prepare ourselves to play with respect. But {after a 39-year wait}, we’ll be ready to play.”

The 27 capped Nigeria international said further, “Going into this AFCON, after a very long time, of course we need experience, we need to learn. But we’re not scared of going into the AFCON. We have worked hard to qualify, so we must also be ready to play among the big boys.

“If you want to be a champion, you have to play all (kinds of) teams. So we’re aware about our position. All we need to do is to see how we can prove ourselves, how we can improve as a team, how we can improve as individuals to achieve our objectives.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea and Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien although said picking an outright favourite to win the 2019 AFCON would be difficult, however, tipped Nigeria to be amongst the serious contenders to win the competition.

The 2019 AFCON will commenced on June 21 and ends on July 13.
