Denis Suarez might take over Iwobi’s position – Carragher
The former Liverpool defender suggested the arrival of the Barcelona loanee might be a threat to the Nigerian position at the North London club
Giving his verdict on the winter deadline transfers on Skysports, Jamie Carragher opined that Alex Iwobi might be slammed to the bench with the arrival of Denis Suarez
Suarez, who once worked with Arsenal coach Unai Emery, was signed on loan from Barca to provide options on the attacking flanks.
He made his debut in Arsenal 3-1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, and according to carragher, giving that Suarez had worked under Emery in the past, might be all needed to place him ahead of Iwobi
“Unai Emery knows Denis Suarez well from their time together at Sevilla and it will be interesting to see where he does use him, Carragher told Skysports.
“At times he has used Alex Iwobi in that wide position or in a No 10 when he changes the system. It might be that position that he looks at.”
The 38 capped England international further went to discuss Arsenal’s transfer window – saying it was not a great window for the club, and they would need to invest heavily in the summer.
He added, “It hasn’t been a great window for Arsenal but Emery was quite transparent when he said they could only get loans.
“I think the summer is when they will have to really invest. It’s touch-and-go whether they make top four and that will have an impact on what happens in the summer. Arsenal need a big summer window.
“If you are looking at the defence you have to go back 12 months when Arsene Wenger was still there and there was a lot of money spent. They lost Alexis Sanchez and got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan when they were crying out for a centre-back.”
