Maradona is light years behind Messi, Sergio Ramos
The Real Madrid and Spanish national team captain has proclaimed the Barcelona forward as the La Albiceleste greatest player of all time.
Sergio Ramos has said that Lionel Messi was the best player in the Argentine football history.
Speaking on various issues after his country’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Iran on Tuesday, the former Sevilla man, who described Maradona as ‘one of the greats of the game,’ said Messi remained the number one player in Argentina.
“I respect Maradona because he’s one of the game’s greats,” Ramos, as quoted by AS .
“In my opinion he was a genius, but I’d also add that in Argentinian football everyone knows that Maradona is light years behind the number-one, which is Messi.”
Messi has failed to inspire the La Albiceleste to winning a trophy – losing three finals in the space of two years.
With the 3-0 defeat to Croatia on Thursday, the Argentine are on the brink of crashing out of the group stage of the World Cup – with their hopes of qualifying lying on the outcome of a favourable outcome in the match between Croatia and Iceland, and if they could slog out a win in their game against Nigeria on Tuesday.
